The SPELD NSW Member spotlight shines a light on our individual, school and professional members to share their stories.
This month Bronwyn Macindoe Specialist Literacy and Maths Tutor tells us why she chooses the SPELD NSW Tutor membership.
Why did you join SPELD NSW?
I first learned about SPELD when I was looking for information about the YARC and they were running a seminar on it. I had recently started my own tutoring practice. I decided to join and have been really glad that I did. The organisation has become increasingly professional over time.
Which SPELD NSW services have you accessed and found useful?
I generally have about 12-15 students aged from 7-adult. I use the phonics readers available through SPELD NSW, the phonemic awareness kit and some of the maths resources. I also attend relevant SPELD NSW seminars and networking events.
How have your families and students benefited?
It has been great to be able to supply some of your pre-vetted resources to my students and to be confident that I am up to date with the latest developments in literacy and numeracy instruction. I have been able to chat a lot with the SPELD NSW leaders and network to discuss my teaching practice. SPELD NSW has referred a number of students to me through the referral program.
Why would you recommend joining SPELD NSW?
I would recommend SPELD NSW as the professionals involved are in contact with the leading practitioners in their fields in the areas of working with children with learning difficulties. They speak to a lot of parents and know the difficulties they are facing and are able to tailor the services they provide to the changing educational environment. The depth of this experience is really helpful to us sole practitioners.
