Decodable Readers to Use at Home
SPELD NSW has collated a range of free downloadable decodable readers for parents to use at home to support their child’s reading development.
What is a Decodable Reader?
Decodable readers are written to allow students to practise their phonic decoding skills. They are mainly made up of words that students read by sounding out.
Reading decodable books, with words that students can successfully sound-out, allows students to improve their reading accuracy and fluency.
Decodable books are available for both younger and older students who are learning to read.

Free Online Decodable Readers
We have set out below some of the free decodable readers you can access online. When using decodable texts, it is important that beginner readers are only given texts to read that contain the letters and sounds that they have been taught. SPELD NSW has prepared the Decodable Book Selectors assists in selecting decodable readers from different series at similar letter and sound levels.
SPELD NSW also sells a range of decodable readers for students in Kindergarten to Year 2 and for intervention and catch-up for older students.
SPELD SA has a range of free phonic readers that can be downloaded from their website or read on an iPad
UFLI Foundations have a range of free printable decodable texts along with other free games and activities.
Sounds Write has published their First Step Decodable Readers as free e-books. These books are suitable for beginner readers.
Phonics Books UK free decodable readers with worksheets featuring the Moon Dog characters doing activities at home. These readers are good for students in years 3-8.
TAP has a collection of decodable stories available as an iOS app appropriate for teens and adults who are developing their phonics decoding skills (limited books available for free download).
Vision Australia decodable readers are available for loan to library members. Each set of books is accompanied by audio files on a pre-loaded Pathway Player.

Dandelion’s popular Catch-up Readers and Workbooks are suitable for readers aged 8 – 14 and are designed to introduce the English Phonic Code in small sequential steps. The purpose of these Series is to fill in the missing gaps in phonic skills and knowledge for older students that are preventing these students from making progress and becoming fluent readers.
Forward with Phonics for Older Learners
Phonic Stories for Older Learners contains a collection of photocopiable decodable suitable for older students, adults and EAL/D learners. These are great for providing students with extra decoding practice!
Fox Kids Books and Workbooks
Fox Kid is a series of decodable chapter books specifically designed for older students who are having difficulties with reading and need extra practice to develop essential early reading skills. These books are in a graphic novel style and are ideal for students who are having difficulties with reading in years 2 to 4.
The series also includes companion reading and writing workbooks and card games.
Pocket Rocket Parent Pack
The Pocket Rocket Parent Pack is a great resource to use at home with beginner readers in Kindy to year 2. It includes one of each of the 62 decodable stories in the Pocket Rocket range in booklet form in a zip up case along with a sound reference card.
