Do you want to help your child learn to read and write?

As parents, we know the importance of reading aloud to our children. However, research shows that this alone is not enough to teach them how to read and spell.

You are invited to attend a workshop to learn how to best support your child in their early literacy development. This workshop is designed for parents and carers of 4-6 year olds, however anyone interested in literacy instruction (e.g. teachers, tutors, speech pathologists) is also welcome.

You will learn:

  • Fun, simple ways to help your child learn to read and spell simple words;
  • The key concepts of an evidence-based, phonics approach;
  • How to help your child when they make an error; and,
  • Why learning to read and write in English is challenging for many children

At the end of the workshop, you will also be able to enrol in a free, online course, specially designed by Sounds-Write for parents and carers of children entering or in Kindergarten.

The course contains short videos with clear, step-by-step instructions and downloadable resources.

Presented by Alison Perry

Alison is a speech pathologist with over 10 years’ experience. She has an in-depth understanding of how speech and oral language forms the foundation for literacy development and is trained to identify children who are at risk of literacy difficulties from an early age.

All attendees will receive a ‘Starter Kit’ containing resources that will allow you to immediately start putting your new skills into practise with your child at home.

Some reading and spelling resources will also be available for purchase on the night from SPELD NSW.
