Addition and Subtraction 

This short course looks at what concepts children need to understand to be able to add and subtract and the properties of these operations. It then explains the different models of addition and subtraction.

Manipulatives

This short course explains the importance of using a wide range of manipulatives when teaching maths. The specific manipulatives covered in the session are Cuisenaire rods, two-coloured counters, ten frames, base ten materials (MAB) and Numicon.

Bar Modelling and Word Problems 

This short course explores problem solving approaches, including Newman’s and Polya’s procedures. Then bar modelling is explained with several examples before moving on to number less word problems, the 3 reads strategy and finally goals free problems.

Metacognition and Maths

This course will explore the importance of metacognition in maths (and learning in general). It will detail what metacognition is and how to develop metacognitive awareness. Strategies for using metacognition in problem solving will also be explored.

Multiplication and Division

This short course looks at what concepts children need to understand to multiply and divide and the properties of these operations. It then explores the concept of key facts, derived facts and fluency, before looking at the different models of multiplication and division.

Place Value 

This short course explains the complexity of the skills needed to understand our place value system. It looks at the unitising principle, confusion over tens, ‘teens and ‘ty’, and the importance of zero. The course ends with an explanation of the Gattegno chart and links to decimals and percentages.

Introduction to Dyscalculia

This short course will explain the nature of dyscalculia and how it differs from more general maths learning difficulties. Indicators of dyscalculia will be detailed together with a review of current screening tools for dyscalculia. The course will also explore a range of strategies to support children with dyscalculia.

This course will explain how dyslexia can impact on maths attainment and how the strengths of the dyslexic learner can be harnessed to support maths attainment. We will look at the role of working memory and processing speed in maths as well as the impact of reading issues when working with word problems.
