This series of on-demand, self-paced courses is perfect for teachers, interventionists and speech pathologists looking to develop their own spelling content knowledge and learn some explicit instruction routines to confidentially teach students to become fluent writers!

In this series, we will learn about clever planning tricks, key spelling rules, orthographic patterns, morphology, and instructional routines that will make teaching spelling simple yet effective!

The first course will be available from 19 August 2024 with a new course released each month until June 2025!  Register and get 6 weeks to access the course recordings and resources (and 180 for the whole bundle!) to complete the professional learning when and where it suits you!

Teaching Long Vowels: Not everything all at once

Teaching students how to spell words with long vowels can be tricky.  In this course, we show you great tips and tricks to simplify spelling instruction to make it more effective and targeted. We don’t want you to have to teach 8 spellings for the /ay/ phoneme!  So, what do you do instead? Join us and we will show you!

Ending Spellings

English loves word endings rules! There are some rules and patterns around how to spell word endings and here we cover the most common ones. Ck or c or k? Dge or ge? FLOSS? We will simplify these tricky generalisations and then show you a simple way to teach them!

This course will be available for you to commence on 16 September 2024 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Schwa no More: Syllables as a strategy for spelling

As words get longer, so does our spelling headache. Not anymore! In this course we will show you some clever strategies for teaching polysyllabic words, as well as words that contain silent letters and yep- schwa! We will end the course with a demonstration of how to teach 2 syllable words and all their tricky bits!

This course will be available for you to commence on 14 October 2024 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Double or Nothing: The doubling rule

To double or not to double. Now that’s an interesting question. In this course, we show you how to teach the doubling rules when adding a vowel suffix in a really simple way. We will look at how we can make this less overwhelming for students and set them up for success! Then we extend that to look at 2 syllable words and clarify how to teach this rule for those more complicated words!

This course will be available for you to commence on 11 November 2024 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

When Suffixes get to Work

Different suffixes can have different jobs. Identifying them and understanding their purpose is important knowledge for teachers and helps not just with spelling but with grammar and vocabulary. In this course, we take you on a metalanguage joy-ride through the world of suffixes! We will model simple ways we can communicate these complex ideas to students.

This course will be available for you to commence on 9 December 2024 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Teaching Suffixes: y and ly

Y and ly are 2 simple, high frequency suffixes that make the world a more descriptive place! In this course we show you how to plan for teaching these 2 important suffixes and how you can teach them to students in a simple yet effective way!

This course will be available for you to commence on 17 February 2025 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Teaching Advanced Suffixes: ion and ure

Have you ever heard someone say that they have a favourite suffix? No! Well you have now! ‘ion’ and ‘ure’ are suffixes we love talking about because it allows us to delve into some more complex considerations when teaching spelling in year 3-6. Which words you are going to use and how you will help students remember these spellings is all part of the challenge and the fun!

This course will be available for you to commence on 17 March 2025 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Advanced Morphology: Bound bases

Advanced morphology has lots for stage 2 and 3 teachers to sink their teeth into! Working with more complex morphology and helping students understand morphological structures of words is engaging and fascinating. Learn how to teach these complex words in a direct and effective manner and how you can help students start transferring their new words into their writing.

This course will be available for you to commence on 14 April 2025 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Explicit Spelling Instruction: I do, we do, you do

In this course, we don’t focus so much on the ‘what’ but the ‘how’. We look at what a spelling lesson includes and how to be targeted and explicit in our instruction. We will discuss how to provide diminishing scaffolds and what independent ‘you do’ activities should look like.

This course will be available for you to commence on 12 May 2025 and you will have access for 6 weeks.

Differentiating and Assessing Spelling

Differentiating spelling can be complex but in this course, we have some clear suggestions on how to differentiate to ensure that students are always been appropriately challenged and supported. In this course, we will also look at how to effectively assess spelling.
