SPELL @ SPELD NSW is a four-part spelling program for primary schools.
Each Part includes one year of instructional content.
- Part One – Common long vowel spellings, key orthographic generalisations (FLOSS, ck, tch etc), suffixing rules, homophones and introduction to high frequency pre-fixes and suffixes.
- Part Two – Less frequent long vowel spellings, poly-syllabic words, homophones, high frequency pre-fixes and suffixes and the application of the suffixing rules.
- Core Morphology – condenses the morphology content of Parts One and Two into one year of instructional content for schools who have already completed significant phonics spelling instruction and would like to give their students the benefit of explicit morphology spelling instruction. Schools who have completed significant amounts of phonics instruction can complete Core Morphology instead of Parts One and Two.
- Part Three – Advanced orthographic generalisations, complex poly-syllabic and multi-morphemic words, homophones, and advanced prefixes and suffixes and bound bases.
- (Coming in 2026) Part Four – Advanced orthographic generalisations, complex poly-syllabic and multi-morphemic words, homophones, and advanced prefixes and suffixes and bound bases.
Schools can start using SPELL @ SPELD NSW in Years 1, 2 or 3 (depending on the phonics and morphology instruction already in place in your school). SPELL @ SPELD NSW can also be used in small group and one-on-one intervention for students working on primary school spelling skills. Advice is provided in the program about which Part to start using with your students based on prior phonics and morphology instruction!
When will the resources be available?
SPELL @ SPELD NSW Parts 1, 2, Core Morphology and 3 will be published throughout 2025, with the resources for each term to be published before the commencement of that term. Term 1 resources for Parts One, Two, Core Morphology, and Three will be made available throughout Term 4, 2024. All Term 1 resources will be available prior to Term 1, 2025 so that schools and clinics can commence using SPELL @ SPELD NSW at the start of 2025!
